Lopevi: attempts at settlement
Attempts at settlement | Occasional
violent eruptions
A potential threat for nearby islands

The volcano which makes up the island of Lopevi
is called Vanei Vollohulu in the local language. It rises to an
altitude of 1450m (3500m above the ocean floor), and its crater
is about 6 km in diameter. It is one of the most active strato-volcanoes
of the Vanuatu island group. Its eruptive behaviour appears to follow
a rough cycle of 15 to 20 years, with, oddly, Plinian activity
occurring during the months of June and July (the 1939 event being
an exception to this rule).
